I would say that April and May are the least expensive. I just checked flights from San Diego to Maui for April and May, and they have lots of them starting at about $350 round trip per person. Fall months are around $600, and winter and summer months are around $850.

The winter months are usually more expensive (and crowded) not only because people want to go somewhere warm. But, it’s also whale season. The holidays are expensive, because lots of people take long vacations. And, summer-fall is expensive because that’s when most kids are out of school (family vacations).

I would suggest going in April. It’s toward the end of whale season, but there’s still plenty of them around with stragglers hanging around into May. The big surf is also starting to diminish and the trade winds start to mellow out. So, you don’t get as many small craft advisories and there are more options for doing things on the water. It also makes for better snorkeling.

It costs the most to go to Hawaii in the summer and winter, less in the spring and fall. Summer is busy because lots of families with children come while the kids are out of school. Winter is busy because lots of people from cold climates come to get away from the snow. Spring and fall are slower times in Hawaii because the kids are not out of school and the snowbirds are not running away from the cold weather.
