What beaches are near Hilo on the Big Island?

jackie33080 asked:

I am leaving in a day! We are going to be there for 10 days, ofcourse I am sure we will drive around, but I was wondering if there are any secluded little beaches or big beaches in or right near Hilo?

The only beach in Hilo is called Ice Ponds and it’s not very big or worth going to.

When I was going to college in Hilo, if we wanted to go to the beach we would drive over to Hapuna Beach Park which is on the Kona side of the island. It’s a 2 hour drive at least.

Good luck……don’t forget your umbrella for Hilo! Happy travels!

Hilo is not known for its beaches, unfortunately. The other poster is correct, a lot of people drive to Hapuna on the other side of the island. But there is a small beach in Hilo called Onekahakaha. Hilo people call it the “baby beach” because it is sheltered and they can take their babies there to frolic. This is a pretty good beach. Good luck!!

not many beaches in hilo, all really small. there is a road near the airport that goes for about 4 miles, has a bunch of parks with small beaches. but these are not the big sandy beaches you think about when you think Hawaii. for that go to kona side
