Hawaii Maps and Brochures (Big Island & Oahu)?

Francine S asked:

I am a little frustrated, I have been looking for maps and information for our vacation and every site wants 5-10 dollars to ship me one map or brochure. Whenever I have traveled anywhere else the tourism center has no problem sending it. I realized they are free once I arrive there but I would like them in advance. Any help?

weird. well I can recommend some place on O’ahu. The Polynesian Cultural Center is GREAT in Laie (also on the North Shore). Try the Dole plantation as well. There is a hike to Laie Falls which is beautiful. Also, travel to Haleiwa to get some shaved ice at Matsumotos. You can get to all of these places on public transportation.

Of course visit Honolulu (waikiki beach). On the weekend they show free movies on the beach. Pearl Harbor is also a great place.

As for a map, find one on the internet and print it out if you can’t get a tourist place to send you one.

Sunset and Conde Nast magazine usually offer free brochures, just mail in the post card. Check off all of the free brochures that you want and they will come in the mail.

You get what you pay for!! I other words the free maps don’t show very much detail and are not very much help. bite the bullet and go to $6 each for waterproof tear proof detailed map you will actually use. steve

Just contact the Hawaii Tourism Authority…

I’m skeptical of brochures as they are paid for by someone who will make money from you going to their place. I’ve attached links to the best guide books on Hawaii there are (there’s one for each island). What makes them so good is that they contain so many out of the way spots that no one else except some of the locals know about.
