do you think it makes sense to skip Maui? Obviously it costs some money so if we can avoid it, I would like to. If not, if the activities in each of these islands is totally different, then we would go to Maui, because we may not visit Hawaii in the near future (5 to 10yrs).

We stay in Maui every winter but we always rent from an owner, because then we have self catering accommodations. All the places we have stayed have swimming pools, lovely grounds and many other amenities. I would definitely not skip Maui. It is by far our favourite island. Try this site. It lists vacation rentals by owner and you can rent directly from the property owner. Much more affordable than a hotel.

Maui is my least favorite of the four major Hawaiian islands. It is pretty but is becoming quite crowded and I’m just not fond of it for some reason.
The Big Island has a lot to offer! If you can extend your trip there, my recommendation would be to spend your entire vacation on the Big Island and skip Maui altogether. The Big Island has 10 of the 14 climatic zones that occur on Earth, so it is very diverse. There are glorious golden and white beaches on the Kohala coast, lava fields in Kona, rainforests in Puna and Hilo, an active volcano in Ka’u, black and green sand beaches, waterfalls, snorkeling, and all kinds of other activities.

Maui has features you can’t find on the Big Island. Maui has a lot of beautiful waterfalls and sceneary not found on the Big Island, like Haleakala Crater, which looks like mars, and the Road to Hana with a lot fo twists and turns in the roads and the 7 sacred pools. THe Big Island has a lot of volcanoes and craters, lava tubes, but Maui is all about waterfalls.

I just returned from 10 days on the Big Island with my family. My wife and I went to Maui 6 years ago.
As people have said above, the islands are completely different. The Big Island has a lot of black lava, not many great beaches. We had a wonderful time hiking the volcano, horseback riding in Waipio valley, going to the green sand beach at south point (make sure you have a 4wd for that one, but it is not to be missed) and enjoying the resorts in Waikoloa.
Maui is more of what you think of when you think of Hawaii. The road to Hana, the town of Lahaina, the Io Needle, biking down the volcano after watching the sunrise, snorkeling at Molokini. I thought the helicopter trip from Maui to Molokai was better than going over the volcano on the Big Island.
In summary, if you have time and money, go to Maui. If not, have a great time on the Big Island.
